What is psychosis?

Psychosis is a symptom of psychiatric illness; it is not the name of a mental disorder. Psychosis means experiencing things and believing in them when they are not real; in other words, losing touch with reality. Psychosis is the presenting symptom of many psychiatric illnesses

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Major depressive disorder with psychotic features
  • Postnatal psychosis
  • Substance induced psychosis (alcohol, some prescription medications and certain drugs)
  • Some personality disorders.

Causes of Psychosis

The major psychotic illnesses show positive family history.

Dopamine levels are changed for people with psychosis (Dopamine is a chemical messenger that signals the brain and other parts of the body.)

Patients with psychosis have high dopamine levels that affect their memory, emotions etc. It leads to delusions and hallucinations.

Signs and symptoms of psychosis

  • Delusions – false beliefs that are not real.
