What is Dementia?

Alzheimer’s Disease – The most common type of dementia.
Symptoms
- Find hard to remember names and recent events (early clinical signs)
- Depression and laziness (early clinical signs)
- Confusion
- Impaired Judgment
- Changing behaviour
- Walking, swallowing and speaking difficulty
Vascular Dementia – The second common type of dementia. Persons having brain injuries such as blockage of blood vessel may suffer from vascular dementia.
Symptoms
- Impaired Judgement (early clinical sign)
- Severe slowness of thought
- Confusion
- Difficult to concentrate
- Loss of memory
- Severe changes in personality
- Mood swings, depression and laziness
- Frequent urge to urinate, without any condition of any urological condition
- Hallucination
Dementia with Parkinson’s Disease – Alzheimer’s disease, dementia Parkinson’s disease is a type of progressive dementia that results in decline in reasoning and thinking level.
Symptoms
- Thinking and reasoning changes (early signs)
- Parkinson’s symptoms, including rigid muscles, balance problems and hunched posture
- Visual hallucination
- Confused
- Sleeping disorder
- Memory loss but not severe like Alzheimer’s
Mixed Dementia – When more than one dementia signs start appearing at a time, it is known as mixed dementia.
Symptoms
Symptoms may vary according to the types of brain changes that occurred and the regions of the brain affected. There are several times when it is not easy to diagnose the patient with mixed dementia because symptoms are tough to vary.
Cause of Dementia – Any type of dementia is caused due to the death of brain cells. Aging is the prime reason for dementia. People over 65 years are more likely to be affected with dementia. Traumatic brain injury can also trigger dementia disease. HIV infection can also lead to dementia.
